Lake District Cottages for the May Half Term Holiday
Summer is on its way and now is a great time to think about a break over the half term holidays. We have a range of both traditional and luxury self catering cottages in the heart of the Lake District for you to choose from whether you visit with the immediate family or arrange a more extensive party of extended family and friends. The majority of our properties are also dog friendly so nobody in the family need be excluded.
The Lake District offers such a variety of activities that you are bound to find something for everyone. Of course the region is famous for its beautiful countryside, the fells and lakes are justifiably compared with Switzerland and the area is bidding for World Heritage status in 2016. There is a myriad of outdoor pursuits to explore with the family: walking, cycling, a treetop trek at Brockhole or ‘Go Ape’ on a zip wire through the tops of the Douglas firs at Grizedale forest. The adventurous can conquer Scafell, the highest peak in England. With so much open country there are a wide range of birds to be spotted as well as the local Herdwick sheep and red squirrels.
There are also a number of animal parks, wildlife centres and an aquarium to visit. If you are more mechanically minded there are steam train rides either along the banks of Lake Windermere or from the coastal village of Ravenglass through spectacular scenery to the foot of the Scafell range. Or perhaps arrange a visit to the Lakeland Motor Museum?
The gorgeous landscape has inspired many extraordinary characters to make their homes in the Lake District. You can visit the homes of William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter and John Ruskin. The Romans also have left their mark on the landscape and the ruins of fort Galava can be seen near Ambleside.
Whatever your interests, the Lake District can offer the whole family a truly memorable holiday. Our cottages are equipped with DVDs and board games for some quality family time and some have ping pong or pool tables. There is information about activities in the region in each of the properties and at the office and also look out for vouchers for entrance to attractions and money off meals out.
